The ACC is deeper and more unbalanced than it used to be: 17 football programs, a new nine-game league slate for most of them, and several rebuilt staffs chasing the same bowl spots. Miami, Clemson, and SMU will get the preseason headlines. Virginia Tech is the team ASA likes as the sleeper.

James Franklin is in Blacksburg after his Penn State run. He brought a proven fill-in quarterback, kept a large chunk of the Hokies’ two-deep, and patched the rest with a top-25 transfer class. ASA’s power ratings have Tech comfortably favored in five games (by six or more points) and sitting near a pick’em in four others. If last year’s turnover problem is cleaned up, a bowl trip is the floor.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Prediction

Virginia Tech made the splash hire of the ACC cycle by bringing in James Franklin, the former Penn State head coach. Franklin did not arrive empty-handed. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer followed him from State College after filling in when Drew Allar went down last season. Grunkemeyer led the Nittany Lions to four wins in five starts, with the only loss a three-point defeat to national champion Indiana in a game Penn State outgained the Hoosiers. He completed 69.1% of his passes for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. He is now Virginia Tech’s named starter.

RETURNING STARTERS

Continuity is the other half of the sleeper case. The Hokies return 14 starters, tied for the second-most in the country. Franklin then filled the holes with a solid top-25 transfer portal haul that included several former Penn State pieces on both lines and at skill positions. Combine returning starters with imported snaps and Virginia Tech ranks in the top 25 nationally in overall experience. That is a different profile than a typical Year 1 rebuild.

SCHEDULE HELP

The schedule helps. ASA has Virginia Tech’s strength of schedule outside the top 40. They open with VMI, then move into an ACC slate that is demanding but not brutal every week. Our power ratings currently have the Hokies comfortably favored in five games (-6 or better) and essentially a coin flip in four more. That is a bowl path if they play clean football.

TURNOVER ISSUES

The caution flag is real. Last year’s team ranked 120th in turnover margin, and that alone can wipe out talent and coaching upgrades. Franklin’s staffs have generally been sharper in that area. If Tech stops giving games away, the talent and experience are already in place to get back to six or seven wins.

ROSTER IMPROVEMENTS

The roster overhaul was massive. Morris added 50-plus transfers (sources range from the mid-50s to the mid-60s depending on counting method), including a large contingent of former North Texas players. 247Sports ranked the haul among the top 15 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12. The Cowboys return almost none of last year’s snaps—one of the lowest percentages in FBS. However, they imported so much proven production that their total career FBS experience ranks near the top of the country. In fact, there are roughly 18,000-plus snaps on the offensive side alone in some tallies, and top-five overall career snaps in CBS Sports’ roster study.

SKILL POSITIONS

That experience shows up in the skill positions. Running back Caleb Hawkins and wide receiver Wyatt Young also came from North Texas and earned preseason All-Big 12 notice. The offense should be explosive from Week 1. The defense is the question mark. Indeed, Morris’s North Texas units improved under coordinator Skyler Cassity, who followed him to Stillwater, but the Cowboys must prove they can stop Big 12 offenses after ranking near the bottom of the league a year ago. Chemistry on a roster with 80-plus new players will decide whether this is a six-win team or a nine-win surprise. College Football Home field advantage isn’t all the same.

When it comes to college football handicapping, most bettors look at a team’s overall power rating and move on to the point spread. But there’s another question J’s Plays believes you should be asking:

Where does that team perform best—at home or on the road?

That distinction can uncover value that a basic power rating misses. In college football handicapping, recognizing these differences is crucial for finding value.

A team may have an overall power rating of +20, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it plays like a +20 team everywhere. Some teams are significantly better at home, while others have proven they can travel and perform at nearly the same level. For this reason, smart college football handicapping requires digging deeper than basic stats.

Home-field advantage is real in college football, and research generally puts the average value around 2.5–2.6 points. But that’s an average—not a rule. Individual stadiums, travel demands, crowd environments and team-specific performance can make the number considerably different from one matchup to another.

That’s why J’s Plays looks at separate home and road power ratings.

For example, suppose Team A has a +25 overall rating but plays like a +29 team at home and a +20 team on the road. Team B might have a +21 overall rating but play like a +23 team at home and +22 on the road. This is the type of detail college football handicapping should always consider.

If those teams meet at Team A’s stadium, the overall ratings suggest a four-point difference. But the location-specific numbers tell a very different story.

That’s where the value can be.

We’re not ignoring the point spread. We’re asking whether the spread accurately reflects where the game is being played and how each team actually performs in that environment.

The same can be said for the Liberty who hit 58% and 41% (ssn aves 46.6%, 35.2%). The pace or field goal attempts suggest that final score should have been in the low 180’s based on season shooting percentages. The oddsmakers are suggesting Chicago is similar to New York with an O/U number that is nearly identical to yesterday’s Fever/Liberty game. The Sky aren’t close to the Liberty offensively and have the exact same defensive rating so this number is higher than it should be. Also, factor in the Fever’s schedule. They are playing the second day of a back-to-back and 5^th straight road game so how much energy are they going to have here. In the last ten meetings between these two teams only one has finished with more than 186 total points. The last time they met on this court they totaled 176. Chicago is the best 3PT% defense in the league and 5^th in FG% allowed overall. The Sky’s offensive problems stem from a poor shooting offense that is 11^th in both FG% and 3PT%. We are backing the UNDER in this one.
