He is the brother of Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur. Mike LaFleur was the offensive coordinator for the Rams the last 3 seasons. The Cardinals have decided to start rookie QB Carson Beck, a third-round pick out of Miami. Beck may get at least a full half of work and potentially more. Projected starter Jacoby Brissett and his back up Gardner Minshew are both expected to sit this one out. 2nd year man Kedon Slovis (2 career regular season pass attempts) is expected to take over when Beck heads to the bench. Furthermore, the NFL Hall of Fame Game Preview Cardinals vs Panthers will showcase how the young Cardinals roster handles this unique pressure.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

Carolina enters after an 8-9 season that still delivered an NFC South title and a home playoff appearance under 2nd year coach Dave Canales. They became just the 5th team since the 1970 merger to win their division with a losing record. The Panthers will start veteran QB Kenny Pickett (5,000 career passing yards). Phoenix is 4-1 in its last five games (the only loss coming against New York) and ranks 5th in the league in net rating (+4.2) over that stretch.

The biggest jump has come on the defensive end, where the Mercury have been excellent. With Plum now in the mix to boost the offense, this team can become dangerous if it reaches the playoffs.

Atlanta is 5-1 in its last six games, but the wins look softer on paper (Sparks, Tempo, Sky, Storm, plus one quality win over the Wings). The Dream’s net rating over a comparable recent stretch sits at just +1.6. More telling: Atlanta has covered only one of those recent games and sits at just 1 cover in its last 10.

While Atlanta grades as better than average in both offensive and defensive rating, it doesn’t shoot particularly well (49.4% eFG%, 12th-worst in the league). Phoenix, with Plum’s scoring punch, should find plenty of looks against a Dream defense that ranks last in the WNBA in opponents’ field-goal percentage allowed.
